Paramount has reportedly hired personal Jeremy Garelick, who scripted The Break-Up starring Jennifer Aniston, to write and direct the adaptation of the 90's show that starred David Hasselhoff of Knight Rider fame and launched the career of pin-up Pamela Anderson.
Garelick - who has never actually seen the show - was sent the script do a rewrite and saw an opportunity to turn it into comedy.
Baywatch fans will no doubt be over the moon to hear that the tanned and toned figures in red are set to return.
He said: 'It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to Stripes and Police Academy, the comedies I loved growing up,
'Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were.'
The story will now centre on two unlikely lifeguard candidates trying to catch on alongside the tanned bodies viewers were used to watching during the ten-year period that the show aired.
It has not yet been revealed if Hasselhoff will be making an appearance but the actor would most likely have to begin a gruelling regime to get back into shape.
Earlier this year, his teenage daughter discovered the recovering alcoholic lying on the floor at his Los Angeles home and brought him round by slapping his face to keep him awake.
He was 'barely breathing' by the time he arrived at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, sources claimed.
It was the latest in a long line of embarrassing incidents for the star who has been admitted to hospital 'up to ten times' with suspected alcohol poisoning.
He is said to have had an alcohol level of .39 - more than four times the legal limit for driving in California.
