BNP Secretary General and veteran politician Khandaker Delwar Hossain passed away at Singapore Mount Elizabeth Hospital on Wednesday. He was 81, reports UNB. Delwar's son Akbar Hossain Bablu told the agency that his father died at 5:44 pm (Singapore time). His body will be sent to Bangladesh today (Thursday) on completion of formalities. On March 4 Delwar flew to Singapore for treatment by an air ambulance. Earlier, he was admitted to Square Hospital here in a critical condition. He was kept in ICU on respiratory support. Born in Prachuria village of Ghior Upazila, Manikganj on Feb 1, 1933, Khandker Delwar Hossain graduated from Dhaka University in economics in 1955. He also received an LLB degree from the same university. He served as an economics teacher of different colleges, including Murari Chand College in Sylhet. Delwar started his political career through the Language Movement in 1952, contesting the 1954 elections from the Jukto Front. He joined the National Awami Party (NAP) in 1957. In politics, he was the follower of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, the Muslim leader who used non-violent, mass civil disobedience techniques to promote nationalism in the then East Pakistan. Delwar played a great role as an organiser during the Liberation War in 1971. During the Mass Upsurge of 1969 against the autocratic rule of Ayub Khan, he was one of the frontline leaders. He joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) soon after then president Ziaur Rahman founded the party on Sep 01, in 1978. A man of illustrious political career, he was a five-time member of parliament from Manikganj's Ghior-Doulatpur constituency, being the chief whip in the seventh and eighth parliament. During the anti-autocratic movement of 1990, he was member of the Seven-Party Liaison Committee led by BNP. During the last army-backed caretaker government, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia expelled the party secretary general Mannan Bhuiyan from his post in Sep 3, 2007. Bhuiyan was replaced by Khandaker Delwar Hossain. As most of the BNP senior leaders, including Khaleda Zia, were arrested at that time on various charges, Delwar inspired the mainstream politics after taking over as its secretary general. Delwar was again made the secretary general after the party's fifth national council, held on Dec 8, 2009. Delwar Hossain left behind one daughter, three sons, and countless well-wishers to mourn his death. Meanwhile, President Zillur Rahman has expressed deep sorrow at the death of BNP secretary general Khandker Delwar Hossain, report agencies. In a condolence message on Wednesday, Zillur said the country has lost a veteran politician with the death of Delwar. The president prayed for salvation of the departed soul of the BNP leader and conveyed his sympathy to his bereaved family members. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has condoled the death of BNP secretary general and veteran politician Khandaker Delwar Hossain who passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Wednesday. In a condolence message, Hasina prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. Awami League has expressed deep shock at the death of BNP secretary general Khandker Delwar Hossain. In a statement on Wednesday, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said, "The people of Bangladesh have lost a patriot politician dedicated to parliamentary democratic politics at the death of Khandker Delwar Hossain." Ashraf prayed for salvation for the departed soul of the BNP leader and expressed sympathy for his bereaved family members. Parliament Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate and Deputy Speaker Shaukat Ali on Wednesday expressed their deep shock at the death of BNP secretary general Khandakar Delwar Hosain. In a condolence message, Abdul Hamid said the country lost a veteran politician at the death of Delwar. An irreparable vacuum is created in country's politics at his death. He prayed for peace of the departed soul and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family members. In another message, Deputy Speaker Shaukat Ali condoled the death of Delwar and also prayed for peace of the departed soul and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family members.
